What is Faith Formation?

What is “Faith Formation”?  Why do we do it?  What is the purpose?

These are important questions that we should all know the answer for.  Faith Formation is instruction in the truths that God has revealed to us, which have been preserved and passed down in the Church God created: the Catholic Church.

God the Son became a human being for three reasons.  To teach us about God and what God wants of us, to save us from our sins and to draw us into a relationship with Him.  These teachings have eternal importance for all people.  This is why the Church preserves and transmits these truths and why we teach Faith Formation.

The purpose of Faith Formation is to answer the questions, “Who is God and why did He make me?” Through this we learn that God is love, that He loves us and that He made us to love Him and each other.

All Saints Parish is committed to passing on the Truth of Jesus Christ as preserved in the Holy Catholic Church.  This Truth was recorded in the Old Testament, fully revealed in the Incarnate Word of God – Jesus Christ and passed on infallibly by the Apostles and their successors through Scripture and tradition.

This is the Faith that we strive to teach the children of All Saints Parish.

At All Saints Parish the youth begin a two year process of Confirmation preparation in 8th grade,
culminating in the Sacrament of Confirmation at the end of their 9th Grade year.

THE EFFECTS OF CONFIRMATION

It is evident from its celebration that the effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost.

From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:

  • It roots us more deeply in the divine filiation which makes us cry, “Abba! Father!”;
  • It unites us more firmly to Christ;
  • It increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us;
  • It renders our bond with the Church more perfect;
  • It gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross:

Recall then that you have received the spiritual seal, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence, the spirit of holy fear in God’s presence. Guard what you have received. God the Father has marked you with his sign; Christ the Lord has confirmed you and has placed his pledge, the Spirit, in your hearts. -St. Ambrose

Like Baptism which it completes, Confirmation is given only once, for it too imprints on the soul an indelible spiritual mark, the “character,” which is the sign that Jesus Christ has marked a Christian with the seal of his Spirit by clothing him with power from on high so that he may be his witness.

This “character” perfects the common priesthood of the faithful, received in Baptism, and “the confirmed person receives the power to profess faith in Christ publicly and as it were officially (quasi Ex officio).” -Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1302-1305

I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these instructions to you so that, if I am delayed, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and bulwark of the truth.” -1 Timothy 3:14-15
